Welcome
Welcome to DSM Associates Psychology Group. It is our mission to provide unparalleled service to assist individuals, couples, and families in meeting their highest level of personal potential. The owners of the practice, Drs. Debbie Smithyman and Sue McKenna, have each been providing services in Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas for over 20 years. We pride ourselves on delivering individualized treatment to meet the needs and goals of each client.
We understand that the decision to seek therapy is very personal. Many people question if therapy is right for them or how they might benefit from the process. We have found that there are a number of potential benefits. To name a few, we work to provide support to our clients and to assist them with improving skills in problem-solving, coping, emotion regulation, socialization, relationships, and academic and occupational performance.
People often present for therapy for a wide range of issues including but not limited to the following: depression, anxiety, attentional deficits, behavioral issues, grief and loss, unresolved childhood issues, academic problems, relationship difficulties, and the management of acute situational stressors. Therapy is most effective when the therapist works from the place of the client and offers an objective and fresh perspective on the presenting issues. Like most things in life, the benefits an individual realizes from therapy largely depend on how engaged one gets in the process and how willing an individual is to make use of the guidance and tools that are offered. A comfortable therapeutic relationship is the starting point for growth. It is important for individuals to seek out a therapist with whom they feel they can work. Therapy can be both rewarding and difficult. It is a process of change that takes energy and may include set-backs. However, the outcome is most often worth the work that is put into the journey. We look forward to working with you and appreciate the opportunity to help you to take this step toward growth and change.
